Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report early analysis suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior official commented the incident left him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
