Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
