This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities through this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like protective of her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has rendered the children frightened. After Finney is taken by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he dreads a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, nighttime, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story about the fallen religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who states early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals begin profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet the lead actress manages to present Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel
Black Bag
The current week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh presents a espionage tale as precise as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission to discover a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, various showings, Sky Cinema
